#19 Hiding His Word in my heart – Week 5

Here is the fifth week of Hiding His Word in my heart!

If you need a recap on what our #HidingHisWordinmyheart initiative is about, go back and read blog #14. So far we’ve memorised:

  • Week 1 – Philippians 4 v 6-7 -See blog #15 for the cue cards.
  • Week 2 – Jeremiah 29:11-13 – See blog #16 for the cue cards.
  • Week 3 – Hebrews 4:14-16. See blog #17 for cue cards.
  • Week 4 – Colossians 1:15-17. See blog #18.
How did you get on memorizing Colossians 1:15-17? How did the scripture speak to you? What impact does it have in your life?

One of the Come Closer women, Joan, has shared that she records herself reading the scripture on her phone, and then plays it back to help her memory. Great idea! Have you got any memory tips?

This week’s Scripture is found in Colossians and tells us what to ‘put on’. It’s Colossians 3:12-14.

Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV)

In Colossians 3 we are called to ‘put on’ the ultimate wardrobe! Paul explains that it’s like putting on a whole new set of clothes. These key items all complement each other, they fit well, and work well together, and will ensure we are properly dressed for every occasion. We are encouraged to wear these layers so that we are thoroughly prepared for whatever situations come our way.

Nevertheless, being transformed is a slow and often challenging process, and yet is key to our growth as disciples and apprentices of Jesus. In 1 John 2 v 6 we are told ‘Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus lived.’ As we read the gospels, we can see so clearly how Jesus wore these every single day and lived out his life with total compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and above all – love. I want to live like Jesus.

So, prayerfully consider each virtue as you memorise this scripture. Think about how you can put this on every morning and wear it throughout the whole day. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you areas you might need to grow in or change?

You can download the cue cards and pocket card A4 file here.

Maybe these verses are already familiar verse. Do you think you know it by heart? If yes, then add in a few verses after this chunk of scripture and stretch your memory further.

The verses here are planted between some incredible truths. Have a read around this week’s verses, and see the context they were written in. What is God’s Word saying to you as you read this week’s verse? Think on the ‘doing’ words of the verses. How has this verse been important to you in the past? How can you apply its Truth?

We’ve also provided other Scriptures to digest, which sit alongside this week’s verse:

  • Read from verse 1 of Colossians 3 which also tells us what to ‘put off’ .
  • 1 John 2 v 6 (see The Passion Translation version of this below in the picture).
  • Philippians 4:8-9a
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17
  • 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
  • I Thessalonians 5:8
  • Ephesians 4:24

We pray they would sink deeply into your heart and mind.

May God bless you as you purposefully dwell on His word and allow the Holy Spirit to write it on your heart.

Enjoy the journey! We’ll be memorising right alongside you!

Love the Come Closer Team
