#18 Hiding His Word in my heart – Week 4

Welcome to the fourth week of Hiding His Word in my heart! If you’re just joining us on this journey, welcome! We’re delighted you’re here!

Quick Recap – #HidingHisWordinmyheart is our new initiative, which we described in blog #14. The idea is across the 7 weeks from Easter Sunday to Pentecost, we post a new scripture each Sunday, and give you resources to help memorise them. We’re now half way through!
Here is a quick list on the Scriptures we have done so far:

  • Week 1 – Philippians 4 v 6-7 -See blog #15 for the cue cards.
  • Week 2, was Jeremiah 29:11-13 – See blog #16 for the cue cards.
  • Week 3, last week, was Hebrews 4:14-16. See blog #17 for cue cards. How did you get on memorizing Hebrews 4:14-16? Well done for any effort you’ve given in remembering God’s Word. How did the scripture speak to you?

This week’s Scripture is a stunning description of Jesus, the exalted Messiah. It’s Colossians 1 v 15-17.

Colossians 1: 15-17 (NIV)

Colossians 1 verse 15 through to 23, provides an exaltation of the supremacy, sufficiency, and deity of Jesus. Some Biblical scholars refer to these verses as a hymn, a song of praise. It gives voice to Jesus being the crucified and exalted Messiah and declares the pre-eminence in His person and work. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Wow! What incredible truths to dwell on. So let us try to memorise the first three verses of this incredible declaration.

As promised, we’ve provided cue cards to print out at home. There are 5 larger cue cards, which have gradually more blanks in them. This is to help you to test your memory as you move through the week. There is also a smaller pocket cue card, so you can take it with you wherever you go.

You can download the cue cards and pocket card A4 file here.

Wonderfully, these verses here are planted between some incredible truths. We gently challenge you to read the entire chapter of Colossians 1, and see the context this week’s verses are written in. We don’t want to only memorise scripture but desire it to sink deeply into our hearts and change us.  So, what is God’s Word saying to you as you read this week’s verse? How has this verse been important to you in the past?

We’ve also provided a few other scriptures which sit alongside this week’s verse:

  • Read through to verse 23 of Colossians 1- How many descriptions of Jesus do you find?
  • John 1:1-3
  • John 17:25-26
  • The Bible Society’s have produced a short video explaining the book of Colossians, which is useful. Click here to watch

These verses are rich in the promises that God has over your life. We pray they would sink deeply into your heart and mind.

May God bless you as you purposefully dwell on His word and allow the Holy Spirit to write it on your heart.

Enjoy the journey! We’ll be memorising right alongside you!
